Mountain of Heaven

For over 3,000 years, Mount Tai was the site of the Feng and Shan ceremonies, the most important imperial rituals in Chinese history. Seventy-two emperors are said to have performed sacrifices here, declaring their divine right to rule.

The mountain is associated with both the birth of the world — Pangu's head became Mount Tai after he created the universe — and with the dawn, as the first place in China to see the sunrise.
