Ji Fa as the Wise King

Ji Fa is the historical King Wen of Zhou, the founder of the Zhou Dynasty whose wisdom and benevolent rule earned him widespread support. In the Investiture of the Gods, he is portrayed as the wise and humane king chosen by heaven to overthrow the corrupt Shang.

Ji Fa, posthumously known as King Wen of Zhou, is the sage founder of the Zhou Dynasty. He recruited Jiang Ziya as his chief strategist and laid the foundations for the overthrow of the Shang Dynasty.

Vision of the Red Sorghum

In a famous episode of the Investiture of the Gods, Ji Fa dreamed of a red sorghum field before receiving his divine mandate. He interpreted this dream with the help of Jiang Ziya, who explained it as a sign of heavenly approval for the new dynasty.

The Six-Li Mountain Campaign

Ji Fa led the military campaign against the Shang from his base at Mount Qi, advancing across six hundred li of territory. His forces were blessed by Jiang Ziya's strategic brilliance and the support of celestial beings, eventually defeating the Shang at the Battle of Muye.

Founder of the Zhou Dynasty

After the defeat of the Shang, Ji Fa's son Wu Wang completed the conquest, but Ji Fa was posthumously honored as the founder of the dynasty that would rule China for nearly 800 years. His teachings formed the basis of Zhou Confucian thought.
