Beyond the Myth
The Foremost in Hearing
Ananda was renowned for his extraordinary memory. He could remember every sermon the Buddha gave and every conversation he overheard. His title "Foremost in Hearing" (多聞第一) reflects his ability to recall precisely what he heard.
The First Buddhist Council
After the Buddha's death, Ananda played a crucial role in preserving the teachings. At the First Buddhist Council, convened seven weeks after the Buddha's parinirvana, he recited the entire Buddhist canon from memory. The teachings preserved at this council became the foundation of all Buddhist scriptures.
Veneration in Chinese Buddhism
Ananda is venerated throughout the Buddhist world, including in China. He often appears flanking the Buddha's statue in Chinese Buddhist temples, with Ananda on one side and Mahakashyapa (the other chief disciple) on the other. He is the patron of devotees who serve the dharma with humility.
