Origin Story

The Dragon Prince's Crime

The White Dragon Horse was originally Ao Lie (敖烈), the third prince of the West Sea Dragon King. On the night before his marriage, he was tasked with delivering a luminous pearl to the Tang Emperor's procession. He accidentally let the pearl burn a hole in the palace wall — an unforgivable insult. He was condemned to death by the Jade Emperor but rescued by Guanyin, who offered him a path to redemption.

The White Dragon Horse is the third son of the West Sea Dragon King. After accidentally burning the Tang Emperor's pearls, he was condemned to death by the Jade Emperor but saved by Guanyin. He transformed into a white horse to carry Tang Sanzang on his pilgrimage to India.

Beyond the Myth

01

Transformation and Service

On Mount Luoyang, the dragon prince transformed into a white horse and waited. When Tang Sanzang's original horse was killed by the White Bone Demon's first attack, the White Dragon Horse revealed himself and offered to carry the monk. From then on, he served as the silent fourth disciple, walking tens of thousands of li across the Western regions.

02

The Silent Member of the Party

While Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing did most of the fighting and talking, the White Dragon Horse was the most reliable — he never refused the journey, never complained about the hardships, and never betrayed his master. His dragon identity also made him a powerful ally when needed, particularly in retrieving the White Bone Demon's palace or retrieving Sun Wukong's Golden Hoop.

03

Buddhahood at Journey's End

When the pilgrimage was complete, Tang Sanzang pulled a feather from the phoenix-patterned crown, restoring the White Dragon Horse to his true dragon form. He was given the title of Eight-Patterned Golden-Haired Dragon Horse Bodhisattva (八部天龍馬菩薩). The white horse statue appears at the end of every Journey to the West opera performance.
