Origin Story

The Snake Who Became Human

Bai Suzhen was originally a white snake who cultivated for a thousand years, achieving the ability to take human form. According to the legend, she owed a debt of gratitude to a young shepherd who saved her life when she was young — this shepherd would be reborn as Xu Xian, the scholar she would marry.

Bai Suzhen is the legendary white snake spirit who took human form to marry the scholar Xu Xian. Her story, the White Snake Legend (Bai She Zhuan), is one of the most beloved tales in Chinese culture — a story of love, loyalty, and the courage to cross boundaries between worlds.

Beyond the Myth

01

Meeting Xu Xian

On a spring day at the Broken Bridge of West Lake in Hangzhou, Bai Suzhen met the young scholar Xu Xian. Borrowing an umbrella from him to shelter from the rain, she began a courtship that would defy heaven. She and Xiaoqing took lodgings near his home, and the two were soon married.

02

Discovery and Conflict

When Xu Xian discovered his wife's true nature during the Duanwu Festival, he was terrified. The monk Fahai, recognizing Bai Suzhen as a snake spirit, sought to destroy her. The climactic battle at Jinshan Temple is one of the great scenes in Chinese opera and literature.

03

Imprisonment at Leifeng Pagoda

After a fierce battle, Fahai imprisoned Bai Suzhen beneath Leifeng Pagoda in Hangzhou. Her son (Xu Xuqing), raised by Xu Xian, would grow up to attain the imperial examinations and ultimately break the pagoda to free his mother. The legend ends with Bai Suzhen and Xu Xian reunited in love. The legend is performed throughout China, particularly on the Qixi and Duanwu festivals.
