Beyond the Myth

01

The Legend of Bao Qingtian

Bao Zheng's nickname "Qingtian" (青天, "blue sky") refers to a clear, impartial sky. In opera and folklore, he became a divine figure who can detect lies, hear the cries of the wronged, and punish evil doers with supernatural swiftness. The famous story of the "Tigress Taming the Dragon" shows him standing up to the emperor's mother to save a wrongly accused woman.

02

The Black-Faced Deity

In Chinese opera, Bao Zheng is always depicted with a blackened face — symbolizing his sternness and impartiality (the color of iron). His iconic theatrical features include the crescent moon on his forehead (representing his ability to see in darkness) and his assistants Gongsun Ce (公孙策) and Zhan Zhao (展昭), the latter known as the "Southern Hero" who protected him with martial prowess.

03

Worship and Cultural Legacy

Bao Zheng temples exist throughout China, the most famous being the Baohe Shrine in Kaifeng. His image is found in magistrate offices, courtrooms, and even modern police stations. His story has been told in over 1,000 opera plays, hundreds of novels, and the long-running television series Justice Bao (包青天) — making him the most celebrated symbol of justice in Chinese culture.
