Origin Story
The Princess Who Drowned
Jingwei was the beloved daughter of Yandi (the Flame Emperor), one of the legendary sovereigns of ancient China. According to the Shan Hai Jing, she traveled to the Eastern Sea to play one day. Despite her name meaning "Flame Princess," she was fascinated by the cold waters. While swimming, she was caught in a sudden storm and drowned.
Jingwei is the daughter of Yandi (the Flame Emperor) who drowned in the Eastern Sea. After her death, she transformed into a small bird and vowed to fill the sea so that no one would ever drown again. Her story is one of the most beloved Chinese myths about perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds.

Transformation and Vow
After her death, Jingwei's spirit transformed into a small bird with a colorful plumage resembling phoenix feathers, but with the call of a crow. She was filled with rage against the sea for taking her life. She resolved to fill it with pebbles and branches, one beakful at a time, so that no one else would ever drown.
The Eternal Task
Day after day, the Jingwei bird flew back and forth between the mountains and the sea, carrying stones and twigs in her small beak. The work was endless and seemingly impossible — the sea was vast, she was small. But she never stopped, never rested, never gave up. Her story is preserved in the Shan Hai Jing and the Book of Han.
