Origin Story

The Giant Kua Fu

Kua Fu was a giant of immense size and strength. According to the Shan Hai Jing, his people had been suffering from the sun's irregular movements — sometimes ten suns rose together, scorching the earth. Kua Fu decided to chase the sun and capture it, bringing order to the world.

Kua Fu is the legendary giant who chased the sun across the sky. According to the Shan Hai Jing (Classic of Mountains and Seas), he pursued the sun for nine days, finally dying of thirst at the Valley of Drying Thirst. His story is one of the most poignant Chinese myths about ambition, perseverance, and the limits of human endeavor.

Beyond the Myth

01

The Chase Across the Sky

Kua Fu ran for nine days and nine nights, his feet never touching the ground. He pursued the sun through valleys and across mountains. As he ran, his sweat poured down like rain, forming rivers and lakes. His ambition was limitless, his stride endless.

02

Death at the Valley of Thirst

Finally, dying of thirst and exhaustion at the Valley of Drying Thirst (渴谷), Kua Fu realized he could not complete his quest. With his last strength, he struck the ground with his walking stick and collapsed. According to legend, the apricot groves that grew from where he fell still stand — the fruit gives energy to those who eat it, providing refreshment to all travelers in the region.

Cultural Legacy

The phrase "Kua Fu chasing the sun" (夸父追日) has become a Chinese idiom for ambitious pursuits and heroic perseverance despite impossible odds. Kua Fu represents the human spirit of striving for greatness even when the goal is unattainable — the noble failure rather than the ignoble success.
