Origin Story

Dharma Origins

Lotus Sutra of Practice entered Chinese religious life through the translation of Mahayana sutras during the early medieval period. The figure of Lotus Sutra of Practice often absorbed local Chinese devotional patterns and folk elements, becoming a distinctly sinicized expression of universal Buddha-nature. The lotus throne and begging bowl appear across depictions, marking Lotus Sutra of Practice as a being of pure intention.

Maitreya is the Buddha of the future, who currently resides in Tushita heaven awaiting his descent to earth. In Chinese Buddhism, he is the joyful, fat 'Laughing Buddha' seen in temples and restaurants worldwide, originally based on the Chinese monk Budai (c. 10th century).

Beyond the Myth

01

The Laughing Buddha Iconography

The Laughing Buddha is based on the historical monk Budai (布袋), a 10th century wandering monk with a big belly and sunny disposition. After his death, he was identified as an incarnation of Maitreya. His iconography — big belly, laughing expression, cloth bag — became one of the most recognizable Buddhist images worldwide.

02

Maitreya in Chinese Temples

In Chinese temples, Maitreya is venerated in the Budai form — the fat, laughing monk whose image is found at temple entrances and in countless restaurants and homes. His cloth bag (budai) represents the treasures of the dharma freely given. Maitreya's festival falls on the first day of the Chinese New Year.
