Origin Story

The Loyal Governor

Su Hu was the governor of a Shang province who remained loyal to the dynasty even as it became increasingly corrupt. In the Investiture of the Gods, he represents the principled official who upholds righteousness despite serving a tyrannical king.

Su Hu is the Grand Tutor of the Shang Dynasty. He is the loyal minister who repeatedly tries to bring King Zhou back to virtue and ultimately dies defending the dynasty's honor.

The Tribute of His Daughter

Su Hu's daughter Su Daji was taken by King Zhou as a concubine, becoming the infamous Daji — the fox spirit who brought ruin to the dynasty. Su Hu was forced to witness his daughter become an instrument of corruption.

Conversion to Zhou

Eventually, Su Hu's loyalty shifted from the corrupt King Zhou to the virtuous Ji Fa. He defected to the Zhou forces, bringing his military forces with him. This defection marked a turning point in the war against the Shang.

Martyrdom

Despite his eventual loyalty to Zhou, Su Hu was killed in battle — dying as a martyr for righteousness. His death earned him a place of honor in the celestial bureaucracy established after the Zhou victory.

Legacy

Su Hu embodies the tragedy of the virtuous official caught between loyalty to a corrupt sovereign and moral duty. His story is told in operas and folk performances as an example of moral courage.
