Yang Ren began as a mortal figure whose exceptional qualities destined them for greatness. Many heroes of the Investiture of the Gods are disciples of immortal masters, taught from childhood in the arts of war and magic. Their mortal origins gave them relatable virtues that resonate with devotees.
Yang Ren was a loyal minister of the Shang Dynasty whose eyes were gouged out by Daji. Rescued by a Taoist immortal, he was given magical eyes in his hands and became a powerful Zhou general.
