Beyond the Myth

01

Inventing the Characters

After years of study, Cang Jie devised a system of pictographic symbols representing objects, actions, and concepts. According to legend, when he completed his work and presented the characters to the Yellow Emperor, the gods and ghosts wept from heaven because they knew that with writing, all human deeds — good and evil — would be recorded forever.

02

The Four Treasures of the Study

Cang Jie's invention gave rise to the Four Treasures of the Study (文房四寶): brush, ink, paper, and inkstone. These tools became central to Chinese culture, used by scholars, poets, and officials. Cang Jie is venerated at the beginning of every Lunar New Year by the Festival of "Receiving the Light of Cang Jie" (接文运).

03

Worship of Cang Jie

Temples to Cang Jie exist throughout China, particularly in his legendary birthplace of Baiji Mountain (白鸡山) in Shaanxi Province. He is the patron of calligraphers, who invoke his name before beginning to write. The character for "library" (圖書館) is said to honor his invention of recording knowledge.
