Origin Story

The Two Brothers

In Journey to the West, Heng and Ha were the sons of a powerful merchant. The elder brother could exhale with the sound "heng," creating a mist that could see through any disguise. The younger brother could exhale with the sound "ha," creating a wind that could shatter mountains. Together, they were unstoppable.

Heng and Ha are the two fierce guardian generals who stand at the doors of Buddhist temples. According to legend, they were brothers (or in some versions, former warlords) whose mighty breath — one exhaling with the sound "heng," the other with "ha" — could defeat demons. They are the model for the protective Door Gods of Chinese Buddhism.

Historical & Cultural Meaning

Beyond the Myth

01

Confrontation with Sun Wukong

When Sun Wukong passed through their domain during the pilgrimage to the west, Heng and Ha challenged him. The Monkey King, recognizing their power, tried to recruit them as disciples of the Buddha. After a fierce battle, the brothers submitted and were converted.

02

Apotheosis as Door Gods

After accepting the Buddha's teaching, Heng and Ha were installed at the doors of Buddhist temples as guardians. Their breath powers — "heng" to expose and "ha" to destroy — make them the perfect protectors. They are modeled alongside the general Door Gods (Yuchi Gong and Qin Shubao) of Chinese folk religion.

03

Veneration

Heng and Ha are venerated at Buddhist temple doors throughout China. Devotees invoke them for protection, particularly against deception and hidden evil. Their breath powers are symbolically invoked in many rituals of protection.
