Origin Story

The Sage of the Western Continent

Subhuti lives on Mount Spirit-Like (灵台方寸山) in the Western Continent. He is one of the Ten Great Disciples of the Buddha, the foremost in understanding emptiness (sunyata). In real Buddhist tradition, Subhuti was one of Shakyamuni's chief disciples, renowned for his insight into the void.

Subhuti (Xuputi) is the Buddhist sage who served as Sun Wukong's master in the Journey to the West. According to the novel, the Monkey King traveled to the Western Continent to study under him, learning the secrets of immortality, the 72 transformations, and the cloud-somersault technique. Subhuti represents the perfect transmission from master to disciple.

Historical & Cultural Meaning

Beyond the Myth

01

The Meeting with Sun Wukong

When Sun Wukong traveled west in search of immortality, the Patriarch Bodhi waited for him. Disguised as an elderly woodcutter, he guided the Monkey King to his cave. Recognizing Wukong's extraordinary nature, he accepted him as a disciple.

02

The Teachings of the Patriarch

Subhuti taught Sun Wukong the secrets of longevity, the 72 transformations (72 kinds of bodily transformation), the cloud-somersault technique (one somersault covering 10,800 li), and various magical abilities. These teachings transformed the Monkey King from a clever beast into a god-tier warrior.

03

The Mysterious Departure

After teaching Sun Wukong, Subhuti vanished without a trace, warning the Monkey King never to reveal who taught him. This embodies the Zen teaching that the true master disappears when the student is ready — the transmission is complete, the teacher no longer needed.
