Origin Story

Taoist Cosmology

Taoist Bamboo Drum presides over a specific domain within the elaborate Taoist heavens — a thirty-two-layered cosmos where deities administer the affairs of creation. Each celestial official has a defined office, a celestial palace, and an administrative responsibility that maintains the cosmic balance.

Tongtian Jiaozhu is the founder of the Jie Sect in the Investiture of the Gods. He is the most formidable antagonist among divine beings — a master of cosmic magical arts whose disciples support the Shang Dynasty.

Beyond the Myth

01

Tongtian Jiaozhu and the Cosmic War

Tongtian Jiaozhu is the leader of the Jinxia (Immortal-Slaying) Sect in the Taoist novel Investiture of the Gods. Together with his two senior brothers — Yuanshi Tianzun and Lingbao Tianzun — he forms a celestial trinity that oversees the cosmic balance. Each brother founded a celestial academy and Tongtian's was at Mount Jinlian (碧游宮) on the eastern sea.

02

Defeat and Exile

Tongtian Jiaozhu's sect suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of Yuanshi Tianzun's Chanjiao faction during the cosmic war. The loss marked the end of the Jinxia faction's prominence. Tongtian himself withdrew to a celestial seclusion, leaving his disciples to seek their own paths.

03

The Jie Sect Legacy

Tongtian Jiaozhu founded the Jinxia (Immortal-Slaying) Sect, also known as the Jie Sect (截教, 'Severance Sect'). His twelve chief disciples included Yun Xiao, Bi Xiao, Qiong Xiao, and others. The sect emphasized the equality of all beings in the Tao, accepting disciples regardless of background — in contrast to the more selective Chanjiao sect.
