Origin Story

The Great Flood

In the time of Emperor Yao and Shun, a catastrophic flood covered the land for generations. Previous attempts to control the waters had failed — his father Gun used a magical self-expanding soil to block the waters, but the floods only got worse. Emperor Shun appointed Yu the Great to take up the challenge.

Yu the Great (Da Yu) is the legendary founder of the Xia Dynasty, the first hereditary dynasty in Chinese tradition. He is celebrated for spending thirteen years controlling the catastrophic Great Flood by channeling waters through nine channels — work that earned him the mandate to rule and made him the cultural hero who taught humanity to live in harmony with the waters.

Beyond the Myth

01

Thirteen Years of Work

Yu spent thirteen years personally overseeing the channeling of the waters into the sea. According to legend, he did not enter his home for the entire period, even when passing by three times. He worked alongside the laborers, wearing out three pairs of shoes. His method — channeling waters to the sea rather than blocking them — proved effective.

02

The Nine Channels of the Waters

Yu divided the land into nine provinces (Jiuzhou) and carved nine channels through the mountains to drain the floodwaters. He is said to have created the basis for China's geographical division. The legendary axe Yuye (玉斧) was used to cut channels through the mountains.

03

Founder of the Xia Dynasty

For his achievement, Yu was chosen by Emperor Shun to succeed him as the leader of the realm. Rather than passing the throne to the most capable, he passed it to his son Qi, founding the first hereditary dynasty (Xia, ~2200–1750 BCE). This established the principle of dynastic rule that would govern China for the next four thousand years.
