The Dark Warrior of the North, Xuanwu, joins tortoise and serpent into a single guardian of the northern quadrant and of winter — 《淮南子》 already arrays him among the directional powers. The Song court, honoring the taboo on the imperial name, elevated him as Zhenwu, the Perfected Warrior: hair unbound, sword and turtle-serpent at his feet, watching over the northern seas.
