The Eight Immortals cycle (《东游记》) makes him Cao Jingxiu, brother of an empress of the Song, ashamed of his wicked younger brother and redeemed by repentance — carrying the golden castanets (or jade tablets) of courtly dignity. His noble robes and refined beard set him apart from the wilder immortals.
