The paired guardians Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong were Tang dynasty generals; 《西游记》 (ch. 10–11) tells how the haunted Emperor Taizong posted their portraits at the palace gate to sleep in peace — and so the custom spread to every doorway in China. New Year woodblock prints give them full golden armor, maces and whips raised, fierce mustaches bristling side by side.
