《史记·封禅书》 (Records of the Grand Historian, Treatise on the Feng and Shan Sacrifices) records that the First Emperor worshipped the Star of Longevity (寿星) at Yong, believing the South Pole Elder Star's appearance portended peace for the realm. Centuries of art gave him his unforgettable form: an enormous domed forehead, long white beard, peach of immortality and dragon-head staff, with a deer at his side.
