God of Marriage Yue Lao Wallpaper

This wallpaper depicts God of Marriage Yue Lao (月老), one of the most beloved figures in Chinese mythology. The composition follows the traditional iconography recorded in classical texts and centuries of temple murals, water-land ritual paintings and New-Year prints — not an invented modern design.

The matchmaker god comes from a single Tang tale — 《续玄怪录·定婚店》 (Continued Tales of the Mysterious and Strange, 'The Marriage Shop') by Li Fuyan: the old man Yue Xiaohun reads from his book of marriages and ties red threads to the feet of those destined to wed, however far apart. Temple images show him chuckling over the marriage ledger, a sack of red threads on his back, the moon behind him.
