The three-legged golden toad owes its fame to the Daoist immortal Liu Hai (刘海蟾), the Five Dynasties minister who abandoned office for the Dao — legend shows him dangling a string of cash to play with his toad, whose three legs and coin-spitting made it the eternal mascot of wealth. Ming–Qing prints froze the charming scene: Liu Hai laughing, line in hand, gold coins scattering.
