Han Xiangzi's legend begins in Tang miscellanies — 《酉阳杂俎》 (Youyang Miscellany) and the later 《韩仙传》 — as the nephew of the great writer Han Yu, who left the family for the Dao and met his uncle at Blue Pass, where he prophesied the coming storm. The jade flute, whose music makes flowers bloom and petals swirl, is his fixed emblem in the Eight Immortals cycle.
