The moon's rabbit was old when 《楚辞·天问》 wondered at the dark markings on the moon's face; by the Jin dynasty Fu Xuan could answer in verse — '月中何有？白兔捣药' — the white hare pounding the elixir of immortality. 《西游记》 later sent the Jade Rabbit down to earth as a mischievous princess. The mortar and pestle beneath the cassia tree remain the rabbit's fixed emblem.
