The Examination Star's cult fused the northern Dipper's Kui stars with the demon-queller Zhong Kui: as the patron of examination candidates he is painted a blue-faced spirit, one foot kicking backward, the other planted on the giant ao-turtle's head — '独占鳌头' — his brush raised to dot the successful name. Every examination hall in the Ming–Qing empire kept his image.
