《续仙传》 (Continued Biographies of Immortals) describes Lan Caihe as a street singer in blue, one boot on and one foot bare, wearing thin clothes in winter — drifting through the markets with a flower basket and castanets, singing of eternity. The gender-ambiguous youthful beauty became part of the iconography over the centuries.
