The composition follows the traditional iconography recorded in classical texts and centuries of temple murals, water-land ritual paintings and New-Year prints — not an invented modern design.

The Lightning Mother (电母, also called the Golden Light Holy Mother 金光圣母) joined the thunder department of Daoist popular religion by the Song dynasty, when the Thunder Bureau (雷部) was fully organized in ritual texts and temple murals. She holds the pair of bright mirrors that flash across the sky — the gentler counterpart of the Thunder God's hammer and chisel.
