Rain masters are many and old: 《山海经》 knows them, 《淮南子》 names Chi Songzi — rain master to the Flame Emperor — and the commentaries remember Ping Yi; the one-legged rain-bird Shangyang was said to dance before every storm. Daoist ritual organized them into the thunder department, and temple murals show the rain maker tipping the life-giving water from his cloud over greening fields.
