The composition follows the traditional iconography recorded in classical texts and centuries of temple murals, water-land ritual paintings and New-Year prints — not an invented modern design.

The Curtain-Lifting General, shattered for breaking a crystal cup at the heavenly banquet, became the river demon of the Flowing-Sand River in 《西游记》 — nine skulls of past pilgrims hanging at his neck, until Guanyin gave him the Moonlight Shovel and the name Wujing. Buddhist beads and monk's robe mark his patient loyalty.
