Tang Sanzang of 《西游记》 is the novel's great pilgrim — the historical Xuanzang of 《大唐西域记》 (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) transfigured by legend: golden-thread kasaya and nine-ringed staff, gifts of Guanyin; white dragon horse beneath him; a mortal carrying the weight of the scriptures across eighty-one calamities.
