《山海经·海内东经》 (Classic of Mountains and Seas) records the earliest thunder god: dwelling in Thunder Marsh, he has a dragon's body and a man's head — and when he beats his belly, thunder rolls. Later Daoist art gave him the form shown here: a fierce bird-beaked warrior with drum and chisel, ringed in crackling lightning and storm clouds.
