Wenchang Dijun began as the local god of Zitong in Sichuan, the serpent-spirit Zhang Yazi of Tang and Song legend; centuries of imperial canonization raised him into the supreme director of literary fortune and the register of ranks, his scripture 《文昌帝君阴骘文》 (Treatise of the Hidden Deeds of Wenchang) teaching merit to every student. Temples of literature from county schools to the capital keep his scholar's seat and his constellated crown.
