《明皇杂录》 (Miscellaneous Records of Emperor Ming) is the earliest text to record Zhang Guo: an ageless eccentric who rode a white donkey — folded up like paper when resting, splashed with water to revive — and baffled the Tang court with miracles, including dying and coming back to life. Later painters delighted in showing him riding backward.
