Lü Dongbin — Pure Yang Patriarch (纯阳祖师), first among the Eight Immortals and founding saint of the Quanzhen school. 《续仙传》 and the Yuan-Ming hagiographies give him the scholar's form: sword slung across his back (the Chunyang sword of wisdom), fly-whisk in hand, wine gourd at his waist, forever testing mortals with dreams of glory.
