Overview

Mount Putuo is a small island in the East China Sea, one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains. It is dedicated to Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and is one of China's most important pilgrimage sites.

Island of Compassion

Mount Putuo is the sacred island of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. According to legend, Guanyin appeared here to save sailors from shipwrecks, and the island has been a pilgrimage destination for over a thousand years.

The 33-meter-tall statue of Guanyin at Guanyin Peak is the iconic landmark of the island, visible from far out at sea.
