01
Mountain of Wisdom
Wutai Mountain is the earthly abode of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Transcendent Wisdom. Its five flat-topped peaks — hence the name 'Five Terrace Mountain' — are each associated with a different aspect of enlightened wisdom.
The mountain is unique in China for preserving both Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist traditions side by side, with monasteries of both schools dotting its slopes.
